Who can I get to check my English or my grammar?

Question:

Who can I get to check my English or my grammar?

Answer:

Macquarie University does not provide any proofreading services. Instead, we encourage you to learn techniques to proofread your own assignments. There are resources on the Learning Skills website that can help you to do this, including grammar resources.

Here are some ideas to help you proofread your own paper:

  • take a break after finishing your assignment and beginning your proofreading
  • use a grammar and spelling checker - Microsoft Word includes one, or you can check out resources such as Grammarly
  • proofread at least once from a printed copy - research shows that we pick up more errors in print than on screen
  • read your paper out loud -you are also more likely to pick up on your errors if you do that.

Learning Advisers, available for consultations at the Library Info Desk from 12-2 each weekday, Weeks 3-13, can help you by giving you language feedback on one or two paragraphs of your paper. This may help you to identify the types of errors you are making. You can also email your paper to Learning Skills using the form at the bottom of the Skills Development page, but remember that Learning Advisers can only give you grammar feedback on a few paragraphs.

The Faculty of Business and Economics runs weekly conversation classes called English Speaking Club that can help you improve your conversational English.

There are also credit-bearing units which students can enrol into to develop their academic reading, writing and critical thinking skills, including Academic Communication in Business and EconomicsAcademic Communication in Science and Academic Communication in the Social Sciences and Humanities.
