I want to study Linguistics. Do I have to choose my major as soon as I enrol?

Question:

I want to study Linguistics. Do I have to choose my major as soon as I enrol?

Answer:

In the BA or BSocSc, you do NOT have to choose your major in your first couple of semesters. In fact, choosing your major when you first enrol may be difficult as many students use their first year to fine tune their choices and you may not be sure exactly what you want to do.  However, you do need to consider pre-requisites for future subjects.

If you think you may want to major in Linguistics, you would need to do LING111 (S2), as this is the 100-level core unit that is a pre-requisite for most 200-level Linguistic units.

It is also a good idea to study  LING109 or LING120 in first semester to get a taste of Linguistics before making up your mind about your major. Either can count towards a Linguistics major.
