What is the Successful Completion Program?

Question:

What is the Successful Completion Program?

Answer:

The successful completion program has been designed to assist students. International students who are 'at risk' of not meeting their course requirements are required to be identified and notified by the University.

How does the program help?

The successful completion program can help you to:

  • understand and overcome any academic and or personal difficulties
  • understand how academic performance may affect your enrolment and student visa
  • access personal support services which the University offers.

What does 'at risk' mean?

If a student meets any of the following criteria then they are considered to be 'at risk' by the University and it is recommended they complete the Successful Completion Program:

  • Where a student has failed 50% or more of their subjects in a session; or,
  • Grade Point Average (GPA) is less than 1.5 for their entire program.

After a student has been notified that they are 'at risk' they may become subject to the University's Minimum Rate of Progress rules.

Minimum rate of progress rules

General Coursework Rules

Students who do not meet the required 'minimum rate of progress' will be excluded from their studies. This means a student is no longer able to study at Macquarie University for the exclusion period (usually 2 years). Students are able to appeal this decision.

Minimum Rate of Progress for: Undergraduate Students
Minimum rate of progress for an undergraduate is considered to be unsatisfactory at the end of an academic year if the student has attempted at least 36 credit points with an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of less than 1.00 and in the year under consideration has a GPA of less than 1.00.

Minimum Rate of Progress for: Postgraduate Students
Minimum rate of progress for a postgraduate is considered to be unsatisfactory at the end of the academic year if the student has attempted at least 24 credit points with an overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of less than 1.00 and in the year under consideration has a GPA of less than 1.00.

Why is this important?

International Students Visa Holders who do not maintain the minimum rate of progress, or do not satisfy any other course requirements, may be reported to the Department of Immigration. Students who are reported may be subject to visa cancellation.
