Can I enrol as a full-time student then change into a part-time one (or vice versa)?

Question:

Can I enrol as a full-time student then change into a part-time one (or vice versa)?

Answer:

Domestic Students:

Yes, if you are a domestic student you can swap between full-time and part-time and there is no requirement to notify the University. You are classified as a full-time or part-time student based on the number of credit points you enrol into each year and the course you are studying. This is calculated automatically after enrolment.

For undergraduate students:

  • Full-time is at least 3 units  (30 credit points) in Session 1 or 2; or 2 units (20 credit points) in Session 3
  • Part-time is less than 3 units in Session 1 or 2; or 1 unit (10 credit points) in Session 3

You are considered a full-time student in one session of study if you are enrolled in 30 credit points or more (eg. 3 units).

Full-time study varies between postgraduate courses so please submit an online enquiry if you require advice on this as a postgraduate student.

Be aware, changing your status from full-time to part-time and vice versa could have an impact on your Tertiary Concession Travel and Government benefits.

International students

To ensure student visa holders complete the course with the period indicated on the electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE), a full-time submit a Reduce Study Load application, however eligibility to reduce your study load is either due to:

  •  Academic (due to poor academic performance, or units not being available) or
  • Compassionate or Compelling grounds (due to advice from a health professional).
