How does the Next Step Pathway work?


The Next Step program is suitable for students looking for an alternative pathway into a Bachelor degree program. Students studying via the Non-award pathway have a large selection of units to choose from, with each of the four faculties offering units to pathway students. Non-award units successfully completed as part of the pathway will be credited towards the student’s award course at Macquarie University.

To secure a guaranteed place in a Bachelor degree program, students need to successfully complete 4 units (12 credit points); and receive an overall Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of either 50, 54 or 57(see list below). Students must note that for Bachelor of Security Studies, Bachelor of Media and Communication, Bachelor of Engineering(Hons), Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Business Administration , Bachelor of Linguistics and Language Sciences, and Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education); each has a structured program that must be completed in order to meet articulation criteria.   • Bachelor of Arts
  • Bachelor of Security Studies* (all required units from the degree program)

WAM of 50 (a ‘Pass’ average)

  • Bachelor of Biodiversity and Conservation
  •  Bachelor of Commerce*
  •  Bachelor of Information Technology
  •  Bachelor of Games Design and Development
  •  Bachelor of Science
  •  Bachelor of Social Science
  •  Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education)

WAM of 54

  •  Bachelor of Engineering (Hons)*
  •  Bachelor of Environment

GPA of 57

  •  Bachelor of Psychology
  •  Bachelor of Science with a Specialisation in Psychological Sciences
  •  Bachelor of Media and Communication*
  • Bachelor of Human Science
  • Bachelor of International Studies
  • Bachelor of Linguistics and Language Sciences
  • Bachelor of Speech and Hearing Sciences
  • Bachelor of Business Administration *

Students who meet these criteria will be guaranteed a Commonwealth Supported Place (HECS-HELP) in one of the available pathway bachelor degrees once they articulate.
