How can I improve motivation and reduce procrastination?

How can I improve motivation and reduce procrastination?

The two most effective methods are:

    1.    to keep your end goal in mind; and

    2.    to break your main task(s) down into smaller, more manageable goals.

It is a good idea to write down what your goals are at the beginning of the semester, and keep reminding yourself of these goals. It often helps to think about where you want to go with the course that you’re studying. If you’re not sure what you want to do at the end of university, you can speak with staff from Careers Service about what sorts of jobs might be suitable for you given your interests and skills, and which courses are best suited to that career path. Having an end goal in mind often helps you when things aren’t going well and you’re struggling to keep going.

If you have an assessment task that you just can’t get started on, think about what’s preventing you from starting. Some common problems with starting assignments are:

  • not really understanding what you are required to do, or how to tackle the assignment
  • a lack of confidence in writing and/or referencing
  • not knowing how to find the resources you need to research your assignment question
